Time To Move...

Presented By: EJ Cooksey | 1/20/2008 09:57:00 PM

Okay folks, I have finally got the nerve up to try and move this blog over to Wordpress on my own domain name "ejcooksey.com". I have never done this before, but from what I have been reading it is suppose to be very easy to do...we shall see.

If you don't hear from me within a day or two, send out a search party as I may be lost in cyberspace!

Should I import my content from here or just start fresh...tough decision...this blog has a PR3, plus a good Alexa and Tecnorati ranking, not to mention all of the backlinks. What to do?
If you have any tips or suggestions, please let me know about them...I could use all the help I can get.

Wish Me Luck!

Glad to hear you are going WordPress. I did that months ago and have no regrets.

Make sure the server you move to is good. I have a few blogs on a crappy server and I can't move them. Even the techies at HostGator couldn't move them successfully.

I purchased a new domain and am transferring each post manually and then redirecting from the old site.

A big pain in the behind to say the least but this way I am not losing any ranking I have gained and eventually my new site will gain the same ground.

Best of luck with the transition

Good Luck EJ. I'm no help here. I enlisted the services of Ninja Jon to make my move...LOL

James - Thanks for the help. I have my domain and hosting with Godaddy. I got a good deal when I signed up for them and it locked the price in at a really low rate for as long as I have it. I have had the domain name for over 6 years and I don't know why I haven't used it before now...stupid of me really.

Blogtommy - I check out Ninja Jon to see if thier services would help me.

Thank you both for your help!

Good to hear you're actually moving over to wordpress, really great move if you ask me and you'll be able to brand your blog too (to your domain) which will be much better for you.

I've not really used blogspot as a blogging platform for many of my blogs, as I've been 'hooked' to wordpress pretty much from the start.

I'm sure that a 301redirect won't work for what you want to do either (basically tells search engines that 'this page' has move to 'here' permanently), so I'm no help with the move; but, if you need a little bit of help setting up your wordpress blog, then give me a shout, I've set up a ll of my niche blogs on wordpress and am not that bad at setup.

I found that the Download squad were really good at explaining what you need to do after you install, here's the link: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/01/15/wordpress-the-complete-post-install-checklist/#blog

I was advised to start over again when I moved to Wordpress because of duplicated content issues. I had to wait for the next Google update to get PR again but in other ways my new blog is doing better than the old one after only 2 months.

Nick - Thanks, I will check out Download squad for sure.

sueblimely and cardiogirl - Thanks, many people have advised me to just start a new blog, so that is what I have decided to do and slowing transition this blog over to the new one.

fabien - Thanks for the offer! If I have any problems I will get in touch with you. I will get you added to my friend over at facebook also.

good luck with switch. If you are going to leave this blog completely I would create a post to your new site so at least you get that link to your new one, and it will probably generate some traffic to your new site.
